<div style="background:#efefef; padding:10px; margin:0 0 14 0;"><h3><strong><span style="font-size: 18px;">Purpose of the Anti-Racism Task Force</span></strong></h3><p>The Ajax Anti-Racism Task Force (AARTF) aims to address systemic racism and hate experienced by various groups in the Town through a hub-and-spoke model, with identified working groups addressing disparities in racialized and underrepresented communities. This model will reflect a similar one to the <a href="https://www.durham.ca/en/regional-government/durham-region-anti-racism-taskforce.aspx">Durham Region Anti-Racism Task Force</a>, which will allow for some flexibility in work plan initiatives to support the community and provide resources during various social justice uprisings. Through the hub-and-spoke model, the AARTF can focus on anti-racism through various lenses, such as anti-Black racism and Indigenous truth and reconciliation building simultaneously in accordance with the work plan.</p><p>The official work plan will be developed by the Task Force and presented to Council periodically with updates on work plan goals, budget, etc.; please check back to this page regularly for updates or subscribe to this page to receive notifications for updates.</p></div><hr><h3><strong>Get Involved: AARTF Workplan Community Consultation</strong></h3><p>We kindly request your support in developing our work plan goals and actions to address racism and hate in the Town. Your feedback is not just important; it&#39;s essential. It will help shape the direction of our work and the impact we can have on our community. Our mission is to improve and address disparities experienced by racialized and underrepresented communities across the Town.</p><p><strong>To participate in the community consultation please select the &quot;survey&quot; tab at the bottom of this page</strong>. Deadline to complete the survey is Monday, September 16, 2024. We appreciate your response. Please note responses are anonymous, unless you consent to us contacting you regarding your responses/referencing your story (names would not be shared publicly when referencing a story), an optional consent waiver has been included as part of the survey process. <h2><strong>About the Diversity X Change Program</strong></h2><p>This annual program provides valuable opportunities for individuals to delve into the essential topics of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through engaging art, educational resources, and effective programming initiatives. It is designed to facilitate the exchange of knowledge around various intersectionalities and personal experiences within the community. It creates a supportive environment that encourages personal growth and fosters a deeper understanding of these critical concepts.</p><p>Diversity X Change facilitates community learning, reflection, and adaptation in the face of complex and diverse challenges. It achieves this goal by fostering relationships and addressing systemic barriers such as biases and prejudices hindering civic engagement. By prioritizing the development of inclusive and equitable communities, this platform aims to create a space where individuals from all walks of life can come together to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and work towards a common goal of mutual understanding and social progress.</p><p>The primary objective of Diversity X Change is to enhance the level of knowledge and understanding among the residents of Ajax and neighbouring communities, with a particular focus on promoting civic resiliency. Our top priority is to ensure that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are at the forefront of our community&#39;s growth and development. The significant day honours the memory of the thousands of children who were lost to the Canadian Residential School system and acknowledges the generational traumas experienced by Canada&#39;s Indigenous Peoples.</p><p>As part of the 2024 Diversity X Change series, this year&rsquo;s Truth and Reconciliation events are presented by the Ajax Anti-Racism Task Force (AARTF). The programming will bring the community together and provide an opportunity for learning, dialogue and healing.</p><h3><strong>How to get involved:</strong></h3><p>Both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members, as well as all Ajax and Durham Region residents are welcome to participate in:</p><ul type="disc"><li><strong>SCHEDULING UPDATE</strong>: A meaningful community healing circle, guided by Grandmother Kim Wheatly, a respected elder, at the Indigenous Community &amp; Healing Garden (Ajax Pickering Hospital, 580 Harwood Avenue South) from <strong>10:30 &ndash; 11:30 a.m.</strong> followed by refreshments and interactive activities.</li><li>A special flag raising ceremony at Pat Bayly Square (420 Harwood Avenue South) at 12 p.m. to further honour and recognize the significance of the day.</li><li>Wear orange in honour of the Every Child Matters Movement.</li></ul><p>Please be aware that due to the nature of these events, pets are not permitted on the premises, and public photography is not allowed to respect the privacy and sanctity of the occasion. The Town is adhering to the traditional protocol of not permitting photography of Indigenous ceremonies and practices without the explicit permission of the Elder.</p><h3><strong>About Indigenous Healing Circles:</strong></h3><p>An Indigenous healing circle is a sacred space designed to foster healing, connection and community among its participants. At the heart of the healing circle is the practice of speaking from the heart, guided by respect for one another and the traditions of the community.</p><p>Ceremonial elements, such as prayer, song, drumming or the use of sacred herbs like sage or sweetgrass, may be incorporated in healing circles to invoke spiritual guidance and cleanse the space.</p><p>The healing circle is not just a place for personal healing but also a venue for collective healing and problem-solving.</p>

Ajax for All Presents: Diversity X Change 2024

<p>Ajax is investing in the changing recreational needs of the community through modernizing and redeveloping our facilities and public spaces. Despite having a diverse and quickly growing population, the Town has no dedicated space for friends, families and groups to hold the kind of large-scale community festivals and events expected of a modern Town.</p><p>Located in north-east Ajax, the Audley Recreation Centre (ARC) is a state-of-the-art community centre with indoor and outdoor amenities, attracting residents from all over Durham. While the facility is well equipped, the Town will expand this state-of-the-art centre with a dedicated Fairground directly to the south of the building on an under-utilized vacant field.</p><hr><h2><strong>About the Fairgrounds</strong></h2><p>The Ajax Fairgrounds and surrounding green space is the first of its kind in Durham Region, putting Ajax on the map as a premiere event destination. Accommodating up to 25,000 guests, the area will be home to community favourite Town signature events like Canada Day and Winterfest and will be available to groups/organizations looking to bring exclusive events to Ajax. </p><p>The 17.6 acre greenspace features a 7.3 acre event lawn enclosed by pedestrian trails, rolling hills (earth berms) and attractive landscaping, two stages, with the main central pathway intended to allow for additional uses such as food trucks and event pavilions, making it the perfect place for a variety of small, medium and large scale festivals and events. </p><p>The 1.33 km winding trail network throughout the area has been designed with year-round pedestrian use in mind. Lined with tree canopies and lighting, dog-walkers, neighbours, families, walking groups and individuals can enjoy the paved trails morning, afternoon and well into the evening.</p><p>Active transportation options such as walking, cycling and rolling are encouraged when visiting the fairgrounds, with dedicated active transportation parking that is able to hold hundreds of bicycles. </p><p>We look forward to welcoming you to the grand opening summer 2025!</p><hr><h2><strong>Have a question?</strong></h2><p>We&rsquo;ve prepared some FAQs below to help answer some of the most common questions around this project. These berms will not only direct sound away from residential properties, but also create a rolling landscape enclosing the flat event space and provide seating opportunities for event participants.</li></ul><p><strong>How will parking and traffic be affected?</strong></p><ul><li>The pathway layout has been purposely designed for ease of access to the event space and to direct eventgoers from the shuttle drop-off area at the north fa&ccedil;ade of Audley Recreation Centre and facilitate pedestrian movement between the event space and parking lot with access being provided at both the east and west of the site. The site will be easily accessible for emergency medical services, operations equipment, and vendor vehicles, made possible by implementing a heavy-duty base that extends three meters beyond the event space asphalt pathway. Additionally, the area will be partially enclosed through the use of strategically placed fencing along the site&rsquo;s westerly boundary running parallel with Audley Road. The fencing has been included in the site design primarily as a means to control pedestrian and vehicular access for large events. This fence will also act to minimize unsafe migrations from the event space towards Audley Road. </li></ul><p><strong>What about outdoor skating in the winter?</strong></p><ul><li>During the colder winter season, the potential will remain to allow for ice skating activities on the rink that will be located on the granular plaza immediately adjacent to ARC.</li></ul><p><strong>Will the other outdoor amenities at ARC remain?</strong></p><ul><li>Yes! The playground, basketball courts, splashpads etc. will all remain and are adjacent to the site. </li></ul><p><strong>Will there be security?</strong></p><ul><li>There will be an ongoing security presence to monitor the site.</li></ul><p>Have feedback?
