Town of Ajax is a growing and diverse municipality with 56% of the population being racialized. The largest racialized community in Ajax is the South Asian community who makes up about 21% of the population. The Black community is representative of approximately 17% and other racialized groups in Ajax include, but are not limited to Arab, Chinese, Japanese, Southeast Asian, Korean, West Asian and many more (2016). Ajax represents an evolving diverse population and strives to reflect this within our community engagement and policy development.

The Town is currently reviewing the Fireworks By-law from an inclusion perspective to determine whether the sale and discharge of fireworks should include additional cultural and religious days of celebration.

The current by-law permits the sale and discharge of fireworks for Victoria Day and Canada Day.

Several items are being considered during this by-law review:

  • Inclusion of additional cultural and religious days of celebration
  • Regulating the permitted sales of fireworks within specific time frames from approved dates of discharge
  • Regulating the permitted days to discharge consumer fireworks both preceding and following each approved day
  • The time when fireworks can be discharged
  • Minimum property size to discharge fireworks
  • Impact of location (higher density and small properties) for the discharge of fireworks
  • Impact on the Fire and Emergency Services
