The Town of Ajax has been impacted by numerous climatic events that caused property damage, energy and transportation disruptions, injury, and economic struggles in the community. Climate models for the Durham Region suggest that we are likely to experience more climatic changes in the near future, including an increase in temperature and change in precipitation patterns, as well as more severe storms.

As a result, the Town conducted a climate vulnerability assessment with funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The assessment identified several areas of concern, including stormwater and overland flooding, impacts on the natural environment, and gaps in emergency preparedness and response. Consequently, the Town adopted the Ajax Climate Risk & Resiliency Plan and Implementation Strategy in 2019, outlining actions to address climate-related risks and enhance resilience.

The Town is committed to conducting a five-year update of the Ajax Climate Risk & Resiliency Plan Implementation Strategy in 2024, focusing on existing strategies, assessing new risks, and ensuring relevance. The Town conducted an analysis to identify the emerging climate-related challenges compared to 2019 and initiated a community survey.

The purpose of this survey is to help inform Town staff about the residents' main concerns regarding the changing climate events and steps that need to be taken to adapt. Your participation helps us understand the level of preparedness individuals have in the face of different weather and climate events and helps us evaluate the community’s level of understanding of the risks of climate change and severe weather events.

Survey participants will be entered into a draw to receive 1 of 4 Home Depot gift cards, each valued at $50, or 1 of 10 native wildflower seeds packages.
