The Town is asking for your help in considering whether the Contribution Rebate Program should continue to be offered in future Ajax municipal elections. Staff presented an analysis of the program to Council in June of 2020, and recommended that the program be discontinued (refer to the files under the Documents for more information); Council directed staff to conduct public consultation on the program and are now seeking public feedback to help determine whether the Contribution Rebate Program should continue in future municipal elections.
Background Information
Under the Municipal Elections Act, municipalities may offer financial rebates to reimburse campaign donations made to candidates in municipal elections. The purpose of the program is to reduce financial barriers to candidates running for municipal office by rebating a portion of the campaign donations made by Ajax residents. The Town of Ajax has offered a Contribution Rebate Program for all candidates seeking election to Ajax Council since 2000. The rebates are paid from the Town’s municipal elections reserve, which is funded by the general tax levy. The rebate program typically costs between $10,000 and $20,000 each municipal election.
