The Town’s Taxi By-law is currently under review. The purpose of the review is to update the By-law to meet the demands of today’s private transportation industry to include a variety of transportation businesses that offer the conveyance of passengers in exchange for a fee, and private transportation business models and services, such as taxicabs and those within the ride sharing industry, such as Uber, Lyft, etc.
The purpose of this review is to deregulate certain antiquated regulations currently on the taxicab industry, standardize requirements between the taxicab industry and the ride sharing industry, promote the provision of services that will meet the needs of the residents of the Town and maintain accessible private transportation options, within the community.
Several changes to the By-law are being considered with regard to the implementation and standardizing of bylaw regulations and licensing procedures for Taxi Companies and other vehicle for hire companies and platforms. A draft private transportation by-law is posted for review and is available on the right sidebar under Documents.
A summary of the scope of the project includes:
Establishing a system of licenses
Regulating rates and fares
Standardizing the requirements for drivers of taxis and ride sharing vehicles
Standardizing the requirements for the vehicles used for taxis and ride sharing vehicles, such as insurance and safety inspection certificates
Establishing a new and modern system for accessible transportation that is fair and equitable for all private transportation companies
Establishing a system of taxi license distribution, with consideration to the elimination of a system with limited license availability to the existing service providers
Establishing criteria for the operation of transportation businesses that promotes the safety and wellbeing of its patrons
