FAQs
What work is currently being undertaken to improve Harwood Avenue North?
A comprehensive study (Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study) of the area was initiated in late 2021 to assess potential transportation improvements between Taunton Road and Woodcock Avenue. A study of this nature is required for all major extensions to infrastructure in Ontario. A final report is expected to be filed in the coming months for public review and comment.
What are the top priorities of the project?
The top priorities include widening the road to accommodate four lanes of traffic plus turning lanes at major intersections, adding traffic signals at the intersection of Haskell Avenue and Harwood Avenue, and introducing other measures to increase road safety for all mode users, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists.
When is the construction work forecasted to start?
Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2024 with the development of the new Grandview Headquarters and other developments. A majority of the project will be funded through development charges.
What is being done in the short-term to ensue the road safety of all mode users?
Earlier this year, the Town installed a Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) at Haskell Avenue and Harwood Avenue for local pedestrians to cross the road easily and safely. By law, drivers and cyclists must stop and yield to pedestrians intending to cross the road and wait for them to completely reach the other side before driving. PXOs are marked by signs and pavement markings. This measure is used when a full traffic signal is not warranted. As part of Harwood Avenue widening, the PXO will be converted to a fully signalized intersection. Most recently, the Town installed hidden driveway/intersection warning signs along the route. In addition, the Town continues to have discussions with DRPS regarding road safety in Ajax.
