Walk a bit further
If you are in a school zone to drop your child off consider parking a little further away and walking. This helps to reduce car congestion right in front of the school, making it safer for everyone!

Not an idea for drivers as much as one for planners.
I think that we can do more than just tell drivers to drive slower or have them put away devices. We need active traffic calming in school zones in order to force drivers to slow down. It's done all around the world and can be done here. Examples would be things like placing speed bumps and narrowing roads next to school alignments with bollards and maybe even greenery such as trees, wider grass curbs, and hedges. Ajax already has great examples with traffic calming involving roundabouts and bicycle lanes. Why not apply something like a bollard that's cheap and effective enough to deter drivers!

Anticipate
Drivers should put away all devices. Drivers should think like a child and anticipate how a child would act. For example. They can't see you when there is a bend or a hill, anticipate that they can't and slow down
