What is a watershed?

An area drained by a river and its tributaries.

Where is the Carruthers Creek Watershed?

The Carruthers Creek watershed begins in northeast Pickering (headwaters) and flows south through eastern Ajax to Lake Ontario.

Why do we need a Watershed Plan for the Carruthers Creek?

  • To better understand this unique watershed (current conditions), and explore how to best protect, enhance and restore the watershed.
  • We want to ensure the ongoing health and vitality of the Carruthers Creek, and protect residents of south Ajax from increased flooding and erosion.

Who is completing the plan?

The TRCA has been commissioned by the Region of Durham to complete the study and associated report. It will guide key decisions about development in the watershed for decades to come.

Why is the Town promoting this open house?

The Town is closely monitoring the development of this watershed plan, as the recommendations will have significant impacts on our residents and resources.

Why should you get involved?

  1. Have a say about the framework of policies & strategies to improve the overall health of the watershed:
    • Natural environment and wetland restoration opportunities
    • Stormwater infrastructure and improvements
    • Priority tree planting areas
  2. Understand & comment on policy & study requirements to guide potential development (growth in northeast Pickering and along the Carruthers watershed), protect life and property; and, protect and enhance the health of the system.

Questions to ask

  1. What impact could future development in the Carruthers Creek watershed have on my property/neighbourhood?
  2. How will the health of the watershed change if development occurs in the headwaters?
  3. Is there a way to limit future development and protect the headwaters of Carruthers Creek?
  4. If the decision is made to build, what steps could be taken to reduce impacts?
  5. What are ‘offline’ Regional stormwater controls and how can they help?
  6. If the decision is made to build, who pays for the needed infrastructure? How do I ensure I’m not left holding the bill (directly or through property taxes)?
