Access Together Ajax

Get Involved - #AccessTogetherAjax

Let’s move towards a community that promotes inclusivity and accessibility. What ideas do you have to create a more accessible Ajax community?

We’re encouraging you to post to social media on what action YOU will take to create a more accessible Ajax, using the hashtag #AccessTogetherAjax.

For example, you could tweet “I am going to avoid sitting in priority seating on public transit so that they remain free for those who may really need them. #AccessTogetherAjax @townofajax” Or share a photo on Facebook and Twitter about what accessibility means to you!

Ideas to help inspire accessibility actions you can take:

  • Pledge to use person-first language! This means referring to the person first before referring to the disability. Say ‘persons with disabilities’ not ‘disabled people’. "). The emphasis should be on the fact a person's disability does not define them as a human being.

  • Don’t make assumptions! Not all disabilities are visible or immediately apparent. Treat people with disabilities the same way you would treat able-bodied people, with respect. If you have questions about what to do for someone, just ask. People generally appreciate your honesty and would rather you ask about their needs than make assumptions and judgements.

  • Educate yourself! Learn more about accessibility and supports within your community. Attend a National AccessABILITY Week event or sit in on an Accessibility Advisory Committee Meeting.

  • Become a Barrier Buster! Look for existing or potential barriers (physical, communication, information, etc.) in your community. Identify ideas and opportunities to improve access, and share them!
